Punta de Mita

Mexico’s Cultural Paradise

Southern California travelers love Mexico because they can leave LAX by 9:00 AM and be relaxing on a white-sand beach, cocktail in hand by 1:00 PM. Most head for well-known tourist destinations, but for an authentic, off-the-beaten-path cultural experience, Riviera Nayarit is the place to visit.

Stretching across 192 miles the Pacific coastline, Riviera Nayarit is encased by the Sierra Madre Mountains and incorporates the resort town of Nuevo Vallarta, the historic village of San Blas, Punta Mita, and the surfing village of Sayulita. It consists of 12 beautiful beaches, including the longest beach in Mexico.

While each region has its own cultural flavor, they all offer a wide range of recreation options. There are fishing villages to visit, miles of beautiful beaches, whale watching, zip lining, surfing, authentic cuisine and artwork from the native Huichol tribe.

The Dolphin Adventure Center in Vallarta features a sea lion program where visitors can swim with dolphins and learn more about them. San Blas, rich in history, is the port from which the Spanish priest Junípero Serra, Father President of the California missions, departed for California.

Sayulita’s beaches are considered a surfer’s wonderland. This quaint town is also a favorite hangout for shoppers, with its boutiques, beachfront restaurants, cafes, bars and local relics. Recognized as a bohemian art colony, it’s also the home of the Huichol Center for Cultural Survival and Traditions, which is located inside the Tanana Gallery. Here, travelers can learn more about the Huichol community and its rich history.

Punta de Mita is the hospitality hot shot of the region and where the new W Punta de Mita is proudly located. This is home base for travelers seeking to explore the Riviera Nayarit region but who require a luxurious resort experience.

Guests are greeted by a “Camino Huichol” walkway made of more than 700,000 mosaic tiles that extends from the lobby to the ocean. This posh getaway pays tribute to the Huichol natives with authentic artifacts that garnish the expansive property. Luchador wrestling masks, painted skulls and witty quotes are featured throughout, while the bold colors and patterns reinforce the Mexican fiesta motif. Art flanks the property at every turn.

There are three murals painted by Mexican graffiti artist Nacho Bernal throughout the property, a 9-foot Huichol statue at the entrance and six private WET Deck cabanas decorated with images of mermaids.

The unique room accommodations maintain the creative décor with zarape blankets and Huichol art. There are 119 guest villas consisting of colorful furnishings, surfing-inspired artwork, Mexican tiled floors and beds with headboards created from either surfboards or punctured tin. The Escape Villas, Ocean View Villas, Oceanfront Suites and an “E-Wow” Oceanfront Oasis Suite, are all adorned for a traveler’s ultimate comfort and in celebration of the region’s cultural roots.

Dining options on the property also reflect the local culture with delicious menus to satisfy every palate.
